What Are the Mega Millions Lottery Rules?

Mega Millions uses two separate sets of numbers: the main one, where players need to select 5 numbers from a range of 1 to 70 and the smaller one, used to extract the additional number, from 1 to 25. Players who match all 5 main numbers and the bonus Mega Ball of the draw will win the Mega Millions jackpot. It is as simple as that!

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t match all the numbers, you can still end up with an attractive secondary prize. Mega Millions displays numerous secondary prize categories to attract more lotto players. Find out more below.

What is the Megaplier?

The Megaplier is an optional feature of the Mega Millions that every player loves, as it can significantly boost lower-tier prizes.

 Mega Millions Megaplier

So, how does the Megaplier work? You pay a small additional cost to add the Megaplier to your lottery ticket and you get a chance to win larger secondary prizes. If you’re lucky, you can even get 5 times the prize, depending on the Megaplier number selected in the respective draw!

After selecting the 5 main numbers and the Mega Ball, the lottery officials also extract the Megaplier number, which can be 2, 3, 4, or 5. This number determines how many times the secondary prizes won by tickets with the added Megaplier will be multiplied. The Megaplier applies to the second prize which is normally worth $1 Million.

The maximum value for this multiplier is 5, so your prizes can be multiplied 5 times at most. For the second prize you will scoop $5 Million instead of the standard $1 Million.

This advantage doesn’t happen when you play with the Powerball multiplier, the Powerplay which only doubles the second prize, regardless of the multiplier number.

How to Win Mega Millions Jackpot?

The Mega Millions jackpot has a guaranteed value which starts at $20 Million, which is the highest starting value for a jackpot, matched only by the main prize in Powerball lottery. There is no jackpot cap on the Mega Millions first prize, so it grows every time it is not won. Since there is no jackpot cap in place, the Mega Millions jackpot can reach some amazing amounts quite quickly. To win it, you need to guess all 6 winning numbers: the 5 main numbers between 1 and 70 + the additional Mega Ball between 1 and 25.

You are now probably wondering about the biggest Mega Millions jackpot ever won. The Mega Millions jackpot reached $1.537 Billion! It was scooped on October 23, 2018 and it is the second time ever that any lotto prize has climbed over the $1 Billion threshold. The $1.53 Billion prize came very close to breaking the world record held by the US Powerball, but in the end, Powerball maintained the title - for now...

Powerball still holds the record it earned in January 2016, when it offered a staggering $1.58 Billion first prize. Before this special event, the Mega Millions held this coveted title since 2012. It awarded the biggest prize in the world (at that time) which was worth an attractive $656 Million.

Mega Millions Secondary Prizes

The Mega Millions jackpot is undoubtedly the most attractive aspect of this lottery, but it is not the only reason to play this huge lottery! There is a total of 8 secondary prizes offered by this lottery, so you have a decent shot a taking home one of them if you don’t match all the winning numbers. The second prize has a fixed amount of $1 Million and you have to guess the five main numbers to scoop it.

You will win a complimentary prize even if you match only 1 main number! If you only get one of the main numbers and the Mega Ball will earn you a complimentary $4 prize. You can get a prize worth $2 just by getting the Mega Ball, and none of the main numbers.

What Are the Types of Payouts in the Mega Millions?

The Mega Millions lottery offers two kinds of payouts to jackpot winners: lump sum or annuity. People who match all the winning numbers can opt between getting the full amount at once or over a determined period of 30 years. Each payout method comes with specific advantages and disadvantages.

Taxation laws differ a lot for lump sum and annuity payment. For example, if you scoop a $40 Million Mega Millions jackpot, this is the exact amount you will receive if you opt for the 30 years’ annuity option. On the other hand, if you want it all in one single payment as a lump sum, you will get around $25 Million after taxes are deducted.

Players who get lucky enough to match all the numbers and hit the Mega Millions jackpot have one year to claim their prize. Please remember that Mega Millions prizes can only be redeemed in the state where the winning tickets were purchased.

Can You Stay Anonymous if You Win the Mega Millions?

Anonymity after winning big in the lottery is an issue that varies depending on the country. When thinking about a multi-state American lottery like Mega Millions, the answer to this question depends on the state where the ticket was purchased in. There are very few American states that actually allow jackpot winners to remain anonymous. These are: Delaware, Kansas, North Dakota, Maryland, South Carolina, and Ohio. Other states require winners to reveal certain informations about their identity.

Do Kenyans Have to Pay Taxes on Mega Millions Prizes?

When you play Mega Millions online from Kenya, any prize you win will be taxed based on the local laws of the American state where the tickets were purchased in. A fixed federal tax of 30% will be withheld from all lottery prizes over the sum of $599.50. This law applies to all non-resident lotto winners. A state tax will also be deducted, but this is determined based on the state’s specific taxation laws.

After paying the taxes to the US, prizes are also taxed according to the local tax laws of the winner’s country of residence. In this case, you should check with the Kenyan tax authorities to find out more about how your international lottery gains will be taxed.
