How Does the US Powerball Power Play Work?

As you can see in the table above, the Power Play multiplier increases the secondary US Powerball prizes significantly. To get these boosted prizes, you need to match the required Powerball numbers for that respective category. In case you do and you have added the Power Play on your ticket, you can become super rich!

How is the Power Play number selected? Well, after the lottery officials draw the main numbers and the bonus Powerball, they also extract the Power Play number from a special barrel. The numbers included in this barrel are 2, 3, 4, and 5. How can your prizes be multiplied by 10? This can only happen when the jackpot is lower than $150 Million, in which case the number 10 is also added to the Power Play barrel.

The drawn Power Play number determines how many times the secondary prizes are increased. However, the second prize worth $1 Million can only be doubled, no matter what Power Play number is pulled during the draw.

Now, if the Power Play number of the draw is 2 and you are lucky enough to take home the third prize worth $50,000, then the multiplier will double it and you will end up with $100,000. Paying just a few dollars more on the price of your ticket for the Power Play could prove a life-changing decision!

Which Are the Odds of Each Power Play Number?

The Power Play number is pulled out from a different barrel (with 42 or 43 balls depending on the value of the jackpot), right after the Powerball numbers are pulled out.

Each number represents the number by which the prizes will be multiplied when coming out. For instance, if the x4 is pulled out, all secondary prizes (except the second one that will automatically be doubled) will be multiplied by 4.

There are 24 balls with the multiplier x2 while there are 13 balls with the multiplier x3. Find how many balls of each multiplier do you have, as well as the odds when the advertised jackpot exceeds $150 Million.
